Prior to the launch of avatars as a part of the New Xbox Experience this week, Microsoft commented that the new features could bring options for microtransactions and virtual goods. It seems like a no brainer, but Microsoft doesn't want to rush into paid virtual goods in the West. Plans have already been announced to release new avatar content and customization options consistently over the next six months, though the avatar store won't be online until the spring.
But while the West, especially among traditional gamers, has been relatively slow to adopt microtransactions and virtual goods, the East has seized upong them. That may be why Japanese Xbox users will be the first to purchase items for their avatars as part of a promotion for the upcoming game, Ninja Blade. For 250 Microsoft Points (about $4), uses get a Ninja Blade Xbox 360 theme, avatar parts, and wall paper.
